Earthquake Movie Tutorial

Using TerraMorph in Sean O' Malley's SOPack plugin,
you can create a movie that simulates the type of earthquake where the ground drops away.
Click HERE to download the mpeg movie (350K).
| 1) Start with a fairly flat terrain to make things easy. Let's call it e1.ter. Duplicate it and use the
Scupting Tool to create the fault line. This is e2.ter.
| 2) We need to make both terrains' heights relative to each other. In my case (using Terragen
units) I set e1 to go between 0 and 10. e2 goes between -4.354 and 10. This makes other parts of the terrains not
correct, but since we will be shooting down the crack, it won't be noticed. |
| 3) The surface map was just an old one I grabbed. I did add a layer which only
shows on the bottom of the crack after it has opened to simulate new earth being exposed. |
| 4) Set the camera a bit above the terrain, looking down the crack. Have e2.ter
loaded when you set it. Note that I've widened the field of view (zoom). Uncheck both Fixed Height
Above Surface boxes. |
5) Now we need to create the script Terragen will use to generate the images. I used
CamPath 3.2. We are standing still, so only create one Camera Path point and one LookAt Path point. Use the values entered in Terragen.
I wanted a 5 second video at 30 frames per second, so in Miscellaneous->General Options and
Miscellaneous->Global Change, enter these settings. Since this will yield 150 frames, enter 150 when you create the script.
| 6) Back in Terragen, load up e1.ter and set up the SOPack TerraMorph plugin.
Select the ending terrain (e2.ter) and enter the number of frames (150). Check Cubic Interpolation.
| 7) Start the script running to generate the images. Using your favorite video
editing program, assemble them into a movie. |
| For a different look, use a paint program to create a V shaped crack (shaded light to dark in the center). No matter what, this method suffers from the way morphs work in that you instantly jump to the full width of the crack with the morph dropping the bottom away. |
Other versions:
square crack (330K)
V crack (800K)
